Areas of Unrest

10 October 2004 - Joy in Mudville

Not having cable, I had to resort to listening to the Sox sweep of the Angels on the radio. That was fine up to a point, but one of my neighbors does something that screws up my radio reception off and on. So I barely heard Ortiz's winning homer on Friday. I heard enough of the cheers to figure out that my guys had done it, and got the details from the net. Though I hesitate to say it, I'm sort of glad that it'll be the Source of All Evil they're playing because that ups the emotional stakes, even if it's scarier. On the National League side of things, I want it to be the Cardinals, just because St. Louis is a real baseball town and none of the other cities involved are. It would certainly be a shame for the World Series to come to Dodger Stadium, the land of fans who leave at the 7th inning in a vain attempt to beat traffic.

The other thing to cheer about this week is, of course, the X-prize. I expect that real space tourism is still a ways off, though. But maybe it will happen within my lifetime and, more to the point, maybe it will become affordable in my lifetime.

As for what I've actually done this week, it was pretty quiet at work. Other than one big briefing on Tuesday morning (which I was scrambling to prep Andy for on Monday), there was actually time to catch up on things. I have a lot of odds and ends to do, but it's nice not to have a panic turn. Outside of work, I went to the board games group on Tuesday night and I'm sure everybody will be astonished to hear that I won a game of Trivial Pursuit. I hung around for a while after that, playing a couple of rounds of Before I Kill You, Mr. Bond, which is moderately entertaining.

I attempted to shop for new games yesterday, as i've read that there's a game store near one of the used bookstores I frequent. Alas, after my used book run (in which I got rid of 44 books and acquired 15), I didn't manage to actually find this game store. It has to be in one of two shopping centers, as they're the only things at all on that street, but just where is beyond me. Maybe next time I should actually print out the directions.
