The title, of course, refers to the Washington Senators and the "glory" days of baseball in D.C.. Interestingly, the Texas Rangers still own the rights to that team name, so it is not likely to be the one the Expos end up with when they come here next season. But, still, baseball in Washington! Yea!
Of course, they're a National League team so, not only is my entry title obsolete, but I'll still have to go to Baltimore to watch my beloved Red Sox. Which is what I did yesterday, in fact. Only then did it occur to me that I should really use these trips as more major excursions, taking the train in the night before and playing tourist earlier in the day. I'd planned to get an early start and take in the American Visionary Art Museum, but just couldn't drag myself out of the house to do that. I got to the game in plenty of time. Overall, my assessment of Camden Yards is still reasonably favorable, but I still resent Peter Angelos (the owner of the Orioles) and his efforts to keep baseball out of Washington. This time they did play "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the 7th inning stretch, but only one chorus. Then there was a horribly cruel mement when their "highlights of this week in baseball history" showed Bucky Dent's 1978 home run.
As for the game, the Orioles lost it, more than the Sox won it. The Sox did hit fairly well, but the Orioles are just not a good defensive team. There were some heart-stopping moments towards the end when it looked like my boys could snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, but I guess they're waiting for the postseason to break my heart. Fortunately, there are a couple of fellow sufferers in my office so I know where to turn for support.
As for other things, this week was mostly about work. I worked late three nights, which is fairly unusual for me. Things are more or less under control, for now, but I'm anticipating lots of quick turn tasks in the next few weeks. As for non-work, I went to the board games group and played Citadels on Tuesday night. I think I'm going to go fairly regularly, because it's a low stress way to be sociable. (I also had a work related social event on Thursday night. That's not exactly high-stress, but there is a certain level of constraint.)
And today I went to a knitting get-together, which required me to actually drive to Reston. That's not actually very far, but it's a pain in the neck to get to because there are a lot more east-west roads here than north-south ones. I thought I'd figured out a good way to go, but I blew it by not realizing that I needed to go south to get west. So I ended up making a long northward loop that was rather out of the way. Oh, well, it was worth it, as it got me started on a project I need to work on. It's getting chilly out there and I'm going to need a new hat for winter.
