Areas of Unrest

10 December 2005 - Good Night and Good Luck

I dawdled pretty much all morning and finally dragged myself out of the house around 12:30 this afternoon. I didn't really have anything I needed to do, but I created an excuse to go out so I would have a reason to clear the rest of the snow off my car. In general, I find it best not to be in too much of a rush to do that, since a lot of it will take care of itself around here. But I feel guilty when there are just a few other snow covered cars in the lot. Cleaning it was actually pretty quick, as the weather was decently warm. Then I set out to the Fair City Mall.

I did want to pick up a newspaper and a few minor groceries (i.e. nothing urgent). But I'd also been planning to see the movie "Good Night and Good Luck" for a while and it's been playing at the Cinema Arts Theatre there, which is my favorite local movie theatre just on the grounds that they don't show commercials. (It's also just about the only non-chain movie theatre around, which doesn't hurt.)

The movie was, indeed, as good as the reviews had led me to believe. The story of Edward R. Murrow taking on Senator McCarthy is interesting and the issues are highly relevant in today's political environment. The performances were also generally good, though I can't believe how old Frank Langella has gotten. (And, no, it's not just makeup. Trust me.) All in all, worth seeing.

I should also mention that the mall was having some sort of odd Christmas promotion that involved not just music but free carriage rides. Now, I appreciate the romance of a horse and buggy, but riding in one behind a police car through the parking lot of a suburban shopping center just doesn't seem to cut it. There was a long line for the rides, though, so I may be an exception.
