Areas of Unrest

26 February 2006 - Ambling

I had Monday off, but I didn't do anything particular with the time. The rest of the week was moderately hectic, with a couple of late telecons and a paper to write. I often intend to go home early, but something inevitably keeps me at the office. My current trick is to just declare that I'll come in late one day. Or, as in this week, to take a few hours off in the middle of the day. That let me get over to the Embassy of Ghana and drop off my visa application on Thursday morning. Which also gave me something to talk about at our office's happy hour on Thursday evening. I don't consider it a particularly exotic destination, but that's obviously a minority opinion.

The weather was decent enough yesterday for me to drive to Baltimore for the Volksmarch there. There was a choice of three routes and I chose the Canton, Fells Point and Inner Harbor walk. It was rather windy along the waterfront, but I was dressed warmly enough and I always do enjoy being around water. I like to contemplate the names of boats, for one thing. I wonder if every marina on the entire planet hosts a "Bali Hai" and a "Destiny." I also decided that Fells Point is wonderfully cute and a nice antidote to the over-touristed Inner Harbor. All in all, it was a fairly leisurely and enjoyable 11 kilometers. I contemplated doing one of the other walks, also, but decided that it was a bit too cold out. And I did have household odds and ends I wanted to get done.

I was far lazier today, though I did get out and run a few errands. In honor of Baltimore, I've been reading Edgar Allan Poe. My major conclusion is that it should be illegal to publish the complete works of anyone. He wrote some reasonable detective stories (especially "The Gold Bug") and some moderately interesting horror ("The Cask of Amontillado" being a personal favorite) but he also wrote some unbearable tripe.
