Areas of Unrest

27 December 2005 - In Praise of Sleep

I normally keep my thermostat programmed in such a way that my apartment cools off quite a bit during the day, when I'm not home, and then warms up in the evening until bedtime, when the temperature drops again. Well, yesterday, being home on a weekday and all, I had set the temperature higher and put it on hold. And I forgot to run the program in the evening. The result was that I was too warm at night. Of course, I didn't realize that was why I was having trouble sleeping until I gave up rather earlier in the morning than I'd have liked.

The plus side is that I got a lot of household paperwork cleared away. The consequence, though, was being zombie-like all day and accomplishing next to nothing at the office. Not that there was much I had to do, but it was still annoying. I left earlyish and took a nap more or less right after I got home.

There are several folktales in which a riddle asks what the sweetest thing in the world is and the answer is "sleep." They're right. And, now, I plan to read for a while and get some more or it.
