Areas of Unrest

9 April 2006 - Back From Africa

I got home from West Africa late Tuesday afternoon. The main purpose of the trip (seeing the total solar eclipse) was successful and the trip was, overall, interesting. I was, however, glad to get away from the heat and humidity and, in the case of Benin, French people. The travelogue will take me another week or so to finish. In the meantime, I thought I'd do this meme from Amanda.

When you looked at yourself in the mirror today, what was the first thing you thought? Not too bad for an old lady.

When is the next time you will have sex? Robert is in Sweden, so the answer is not soon enough.

What's a word that rhymes with 'DOOR'? Shore. I like oceans.

Favorite planet?. Earth is the only one that I've spent any time on. But, I've always thought that Saturn was nicely decorative with the rings and all.

Who is the 4th person on your missed call list on your mobile? I don't have a cell phone and have no real interest in getting one. I don't need to be instantly reachable.

What is your favorite ring on your phone? Having only a land-line, my phone rings with a nice polite normal ring.

What shirt are you wearing? The blue long-sleeved t-shirt from doing the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day in 1999.

Name the brand of shoes you're currently wearing?. I pretty much never wear shoes at home. I put on a pair of Sketchers when I ran down to take out the trash.

Bright or Dark Room? The brighter the better. In fact, I've been known to take light bulbs with me on business trips because the lighting in hotel rooms is so often inadequate.

What do you think about the person who took this survey before you? I'm glad Amanda is writing her journal again, as she often has interesting things to say.

What were you doing at midnight last night? I was sleeping. I can't pinpoint the time of dreams, so I'll spare my readers the one about the giant red chameleon. (I can continue to attribute any strange dreams for the next few weeks to the side effects of lariam.)

What did your last text message you received on your mobile say? Not applicable. Even if I had a cell phone, I can't imagine I'd use text messaging all that much.

Where is your letter box? Assuming this means mailbox, it's downstairs, in the middle of my apartment building.

What's a word that you say a lot? :"What?" Usually an expression of outrage and uttered at least a dozen times a day at work.

Who told you he/she loved you last? Robert signs his emails with "love" if that counts.

Last furry thing you touched? The inside lining of my politically incorrect gloves. Yes, I still wear the deerskin lined with rabbit fur ones. Bambi and Thumper both died to keep my hands warm and it was most noble of them.

How many drugs have you done in the last three days? Hmm, I take vitamins and calcium and low-dose aspirin and my blood pressure meds every day. Other than that, just caffeine. Tuesday is lariam day.

How many rolls of film do you need to get developed? None. I got all three rolls from my trip developed already. Putting photos in albums is another matter, alas.

Favorite age you have been so far? This is a tough one. Every year has had both good and bad to it. The ages that have been most momentous were 21 (finishing college, moving to California), 27 (starting my relationship with Robert), 31 (finishing my Ph.D.), 39 (my leave of absence traveling in Africa).

Your worst enemy? I prefer to believe that I am loved and admired by all.

What is your current desktop picture? At home, I have a nice plain Mac default. At work, I have a photo I took in Tuva, of our van hopelessly mired in the mud.

What was the last thing you said to someone? Probably "thank you" to some store clerk as I was running errands. Oh, no, wait, I called my mother and told her I'd call about tickets to Poland.

If you had to choose between a million dollars or being able to fly, which would you choose? Surely a million dollars is enough to afford flying lessons?

Do you like someone? Lots of people. I often find myself saying how much I like someone or other.

The last song you listened to? Angelique Kidjo's "Black Ivory Soul".

If the last person you spoke to was getting shot at, would you jump in front of the bullet? No. I might try to push her out of the way of the bullet, though, but I'm selfish when my life is at stake.

If you could punch 1 person in the face who's in your life right now, who would it be? I can't think of anybody I'm that angry at.

What is the closest object to your left foot? My right thigh, since I am sitting cross-legged.
