Areas of Unrest

18 February 2007 - From Chile to Chilly

I got back to Washington on Tuesday morning and it was already snowing. Since it had been in the 80's when I left Santiago on Monday, that came as a particular annoyance. The trip was a good one, though not quite long enough. I did see pretty much what I'd intended to (the giant stone heads on Easter Island, penguins and wooden churches on Chiloe). But I definitely need to go back and get up to the northern part of Chile. I'm hoping to get the travelogue done in the next several days, but I've been pretty lazy this weekend so far.

Anyway, the weather deteriorated into an actual winter storm, with more ice than snow here. We had late arrival on Wednesday, but there had still been no effort to clear anything by the time I left, making it a bit of a trudge to the metro. That, at least, was working fine and I can completely avoid the outdoors at Crystal City. I did have to dig out my car when I got home, as I had a Thursday meeting out in Chantilly. That was a hassle, but it was definitely a good idea to do it on Wednesday evening, as it took some effort to move the heavy icy mess. Most annoyingly, some time between Thursday evening and this morning, the person parked next to me decided to dig out his car by dumping ice right behind mine. I didn't need to go anywhere until today, but it was a solid block I needed to chop up to get out.

List of things I need: 1) a garage. Which is now ahead of a new computer and a new living room couch. Except that winter is nearly over and I won't care come better weather.

I want to finish reading the Sunday Washington Post (the highlight of which, so far, has been the revelation that there's a race horse named "Oprah Whinny"). I promise that the travelogue will be more interesting than this entry was.
