Areas of Unrest

6 December 2006 - The Case of the Missing Mail

I wrote checks to pay two bills last night. I put the checks in envelopes and sealed and stamped them. Because it was so bloody cold out, rather than going out and walking to the mailbox in my complex, I stuck the two envelopes into the front pocket of my briefcase to mail today.

When I left the house this morning, both envelopes were in that pocket. I read on the metro on my way to work and I tend to stick my bookmark into that same front pocket. I reached into the pocket to retrieve the bookmark when I got to Rosslyn - and one of the envelopes was gone.

I assume that I must have accidentally pushed the envelope out of the briefcase pocket and onto the floor when I reached into the pocket to get my Smarttrip card out at the Vienna station. Which means that it almost certainly got trampled underfoot for an hour or so before getting swept up and thrown out by the station cleaners. It's not the end of the world, as I can easily pay my water bill on-line, though I am old fashioned enough to prefer writing checks. But it's still damn annoying.

I guess I should use the zippered back pocket of the briefcase for mail, rather than the open front one. The problem with that is remembering that I've actually stuck something there to mail. What I should probably do is not be such a weather wimp, but that's not exactly an appealing option. Sigh.
