Areas of Unrest

30 September 2007 - Just a Couple of Words

As a quick follow-up to last week, the news photos of Star Simpson made it really clear to me that the whole case involved extreme over-reaction. My bigger annoyance is really with the media, who widely reported that she had a "hoax bomb." It seems to me that for something to be a "hoax bomb" there are 2 conditions: 1) it should look like a bomb, not like a piece of electronic jewelry and 2) you should be claiming it's a bomb.

Celebrity death of the week is Marcel Marceau. I can't resist suggesting a moment of silence in honor of the most famous mime of all time.

I had hoped to have travelogues done, but I got diverted along the way, mostly with trying to sort out stuff at home in preparation for moving. Note to self: it is a lot easier to label photos immediately after taking them than months (or, in some cases, years) down the road. I am dreading the process of moving and mostly coping by reminding myself that I need never do it ever again in my life. (Except that I probably will, since I don't particularly want to stay in this area when I retire.) By the way, the inspection on the condo went fine, with just one minor thing for the seller to get fixed before closing. Now, I am waiting for the appraisal to come in.

Finally, in lieu of having done anyhthing interesting this week, I thought I'd pass along two words I've heard recently that I liked. One of them is "grandboss," meaning, of course, your boss's boss. You can obviously extend this to "great-grandboss" and so on.

The other cute word is "Sportuguese." That's the language one uses one talking about sports. I spoke a lot of Sportuguese this week at work, as there are two other ardent Red Sox fans in my group (and one less ardent - or, at least, less vocal one). I'm expecting a lot of sleep deprivation in the post-season weeks.
